FAQs

1. How does your weight loss service work?

Our service is run by three experienced GPs—Dr. Nick Burtenshaw, Dr. Katrin Evans, and Dr. Chris Horn—who take a holistic approach to weight management. We combine medical treatments, including injectable weight loss medications (if appropriate), with expert lifestyle advice to help you achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Our program includes personalised support, nutrition guidance, behavioural coaching, and ongoing monitoring to ensure long-term success.

2. What is injectable weight loss medication, and how does it work?

Injectable weight loss medications, such as GLP-1 receptor agonists, work by reducing hunger, helping you feel full for longer, and regulating blood sugar levels. They can be an effective tool for weight loss when combined with a healthy diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes. These medications are only prescribed when clinically appropriate and after a thorough assessment by our doctors.

3. Am I eligible for weight loss medication?

Eligibility is determined through a medical consultation with one of our GPs. In general, injectable weight loss medications may be considered if:

✔ You have a BMI of 30 or higher (or 27+ with weight-related health conditions)
✔ You have struggled to lose weight through diet and exercise alone
✔ You do not have any medical contraindications to these medications

We will assess your overall health and help determine if this treatment is right for you.

4. What weight-related health condition are considered for individuals with a BMI >27 kg/m²?

Common qualifying conditions include:

  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Prediabetes
  • Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
  • Dyslipidaemia (Abnormal Cholesterol or Triglycerides)
  • Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
  • Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) or Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH)
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) with insulin resistance
  • Heart Disease or Cardiovascular Risk (e.g., history of heart attack, stroke, or heart failure)
  • Osteoarthritis or Joint Pain linked to excess weight
  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD)

5. Are injectable weight loss medications safe?

Yes, when prescribed appropriately, these medications have been clinically tested and approved for weight loss. However, like all medications, they can have side effects, including nausea, constipation, and mild digestive issues. Our team will closely monitor your progress and adjust your treatment plan if needed.

6. Do I need to follow a special diet while using weight loss injections?

Yes, for best results, we recommend a balanced, nutrient-rich diet alongside your medication. Our team provides personalised nutritional guidance to help you make sustainable changes that support your weight loss journey.

7. Will I regain weight if I stop taking the medication?

Weight loss injections help support your journey, but maintaining results depends on long-term lifestyle changes. That’s why our service focuses on holistic care, including nutrition advice, behavioural coaching, and regular follow-ups to help you sustain your weight loss even after stopping the medication.

8. How quickly will I see results?

Results vary from person to person, but many people begin to notice changes within the first few weeks. Weight loss is gradual and sustainable, with most seeing significant improvements over several months when combining medication with lifestyle changes.

9. How often do I need to take the injections?

Most injectable weight loss medications are administered once a week, but this depends on the specific medication prescribed. Our doctors will provide clear guidance on how to use it safely and effectively.

10. What happens if I am unable to operate the injectable device or if it does not administer the medication?

Your doctor will give you a thorough explanation and demonstration about how to safely and appropriately administer the medication. If you have any questions or uncertainty about this, please contact us and ask so we can give you the support you need.

Very occasionally, the medication device will not administer the medication as it should. If this happens, please contact us (link) to arrange return for the device to Tywi Health. We will then arrange for it to examined by the manufacturer who will do so within 45 days of receipt. If they determine that the device is faulty, a refund for the medication may be issued. If the fault is judged to be cause by the device being tampered with or used inappropriately (i.e. not as directed by the Tywi Health doctor), no refund will be issued. This is non-negotiable.

11. What happens if I experience side effects?

Mild side effects such as nausea or bloating are common but often improve as your body adjusts. If side effects persist or become severe, our team will review your treatment plan and may suggest adjustments to help manage symptoms.

12. Can I use this service if I have a medical condition?

If you have an existing medical condition, our doctors will carefully assess your suitability for treatment. In some cases, adjustments may be needed, or alternative weight management strategies may be recommended.
